Preparing for the Road: Tips for Teen Drivers

If you are a teenager learning how to drive, it can feel overwhelming to remember all of the rules and advice you hear in driving school. While it may take some time to master them, the laws and rules taught in drivers ed for teens are created to help keep you and other drivers safe and well-prepared. Here are some tips to keep in mind before you hit the road:

Buckle Up

The first thing you should do when driving is buckle your seatbelt. Wearing your seatbelt correctly can help keep you safe if you are involved in a traffic accident. In some situations, it could save your life. In some states, wearing your seatbelt is required by law. This is why wearing a seatbelt is one of the first things you learn about in driving school.

Know and Follow Traffic Laws

Make sure you understand and are comfortable with traffic laws before you start driving. If you do not know your state’s traffic laws, you will learn about them in driving school. Once you have been introduced to the traffic laws, commit to follow them. Some basic traffic laws include following the speed limit, stopping at red lights, knowing when you are legally allowed to turn, and understanding the right of way.

Practice Defensive Driving

At 911 Driving School, we teach our drivers to practice defensive driving. Defensive driving teaches you to anticipate potential hazards and helps you take careful measures to avoid accidents. Some defensive driving principles include being aware of your surroundings, avoiding distractions, and maintaining safe following distances. Defensive driving helps teen drivers prevent accidents before they happen.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Underage drinking and driving under the influence are dangerous and illegal activities. They can result in dangerous car crashes that could be fatal for you and others. If you choose to consume alcohol or use any other impairing substance, do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair your judgment, coordination, and reaction time. If you plan on drinking, make sure to have a designated driver or plan to take a taxi or use a rideshare service. These precautions can help keep you and other drivers safe.

Limit Distractions

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents. Using your cell phone, eating, applying makeup, adjusting the stereo, and performing any other activity that takes your attention away from the road while driving would be considered distracted driving. Eliminate distractions while driving so you have time to react to the other cars and situations on the road.
